On the way up, we got lost again, this time in the cold Patagonian rain, on a steep hillside of treacherously soft sand.

  • Without warning, the landscape changed again.

  • Campamento Italiano was located right next to a series of rushing rapids.

  • Egg sacs? Fungus? Really cool mold?
  • Crazy glaciers! Every 5 minutes or so, an avalanche would come crashing down.

  • Six hour later (and after two missteps), we reached the final signpost to the top. Can you spot the lookout?

  • Destroyed by fire, though the damage seemed to have been contained by the myriad of small streams that cut through the grove.

  • The most frightening of all. Several of the wooden plans were missing, and the four wire cables were all that was keeping this creaking, swaying bridge from crashing into the rapids.
  • The start of 5 miles of fire destruction along our route.
  • Eventually, we reached Camp Pehoe. Situated next to the lake, the camp is bombarded by antarctic gusts almost daily. To make matters worse, the area burned in 2011, leaving the camp unshielded and exposed. <br /> <br /> (Because of craziness with color profiles, this photo viewed best (as of 2012/12/29) on IE9+ (no, seriously).   • 4AM. The night was not a friendly one, with frigid gusts and 50mph sustained winds, but how could you miss a night like this?
  • Spectacular view of the milky way, with the Large Magellanic Cloud, Sirius, Canopus and the Centauries, among other stars, clearly in view.
  • Night 5. Our own tent was destroyed by the wind (bent tent poles and a shredded rainfly) before we even finished setting it up, so we rented an alpine-style tent for the night instead.
