  • After a flight from Buenos Aires to El Calafate, we took an afternoon trip to Glacier Perito Moreno. It's the third largest reserve of fresh water in the world and one of the only glaciers in the world that is growing.<br /> <br /> (Because of craziness with color profiles, this photo viewed best (as of 2012/12/29) on IE9+ (no, seriously).   • It's hard to imagine from the photo, but that glacier is ~75m tall at its front-edge.   • A guide told us that the ice advances a whopping 3m a day. Every so often as we watched, a seemingly small snowball of ice would break off and fall into the glacier, followed by a giant thunderclap-like sound a second or two later.
