Day 86. October 2, 2010. You know it's a busy week when I shoot similar things two days in a row...

  • Day 81. September 27, 2010. Another episode of dripping water droplets into a bowl. This time, I wanted a red tinge, so I reached for the food coloring, but then realized that two-buck chuck was probably a cheaper red dye than food coloring, and also produces that nice, earthy red. I started doing this in the sun, but I couldn't make the light do what I want, so I waited for the sun to go under the fence before starting this. With two strobes on this second attempt, I was able to push the aperture to f/11, and so pinpointing where I was to drop the droplet became much less of an issue.<br /> <br /> EF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro @ f/10. 1/250s. ISO 800. Lighting: Natural dusky sun from front camera left, 580EX II on camera bounced off ceiling @ 1/32, 430EX II from camera left bare @ 1/32.
  • Day 82. September 28, 2010. Wow! Pretty good for a point-and-shoot! This was taken on my brand new Sony TX5. My old trusty Canon A650IS finally started exhibiting some problems, so it was time for me to invest in a new one. After comparing dozens of candidates, it was down to the Canon S95, or Sony TX5. Eventually, I settled for the waterproof, shockproof, dustproof TX5 because I realized that the only times I wouldn't be shooting with a DSLR are when I'm afraid I'd damage my camera, or when a concert venue won't let me bring it in. So, points for TX5. I'm going to have to get used to not having manual controls on my point-and-shoot anymore, nor a larger-than-normal sensor, but the TX5 compensates by being able to shoot 10fps on burst mode, touch-to-focus, and HD video recording. Look out for some underwater photos soon...<br /> <br /> (Automatic! Just increased EV a little.)

  • Day 88. October 4, 2010. Just replaced the hard drive on my laptop with a 500GB! Now I can fit all my recent jpgs and RAW files and all my music on the same drive! Here's the old one, which is now a 250GB external requiring only USB power. Pretty sweet.<br /> <br /> EF 100mm f/2.8IS Macro @ f/9.0. 1/3s. ISO 200.
  • Day 89. October 5, 2010. Our house if falling apart. This looks like it was built in the 1940s. Oh wait. It was.<br /> <br /> EF 17-55mm f/2.8IS @ 17mm, f/5.6. 1/50s. ISO 100.
  • Day 90. October 6, 2010. A Stanford Bookstore Holiday Cow with two pine cones. First time I used my 85mm prime in months.<br /> <br /> EF 85mm f/1.8 @ f/2.2. 1/125s. ISO 400.
  • Day 91. October 7, 2010. View down Serra from the fountain at the Engineering corner. The moon did a great job of making the rocks glow.<br /> <br /> EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 @ 12mm, f/10.0. 30s. ISO 100.
  • Day 93. October 9, 2010. I'm starting to fall way behind in posting my pictures. I've just been swamped with work from classes and work all piling up at the same time. Having amazing weekend adventures every weekend certainly doesn't help in the whittle-down-my-to-do-lists department.<br /> <br /> This was taken on CA-4, coming back from Bear Valley this weekend for the Tough Mudder run.<br /> <br /> EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8IS @ 28mm, f/2.8. 1/400. ISO 400.
  • Day 95. October 11, 2010. Molly made amazing chicken.<br /> <br /> (I'll catch up in editing the photos and posting them by the end of the week!)<br /> <br /> EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS @ f/2.8. 1/100s. ISO 400.
  • Day 100. October 16, 2010. Just had to post this out of order because it's day 100! This was on a climbing trip to Castle Rock, just southwest of Palo Alto.<br /> <br /> Posting takes time, but I'll be caught up soon! There's such a huge backlog of RAWs just sitting on my hard drive right now waiting to be edited and posted.<br /> <br /> EF 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 @ 10mm, f/6.3. 1/320s. ISO 320. Grad ND-0.6, and polarizer filter used.
  • Day 104. October 20, 2010. Decided to try one of my standards after work today. This is the Y2E2 (Yang and Yamazaki Environment and Energy) building at Stanford as viewed from the top floor of Parking Structure 2. Earlier that day, I discovered that the new engineering quad had actually finished most of its construction. I must be the slowest person to realize this since I walk past it daily, and it had been completed since mid-September. Look for many shots of the new Med School buildings and the Engineering Quad in the weeks to come, especially when it starts to rain and I can play with cool reflections.<br /> <br /> EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 @ 10mm, f/11. 30s.   • Day 105. October 21, 2010. The quarterly CS198 tradition of "Human Mario Kart," on the 5th floor of Parking Structure 2. If I told you more, I would have to kill you. The trick in this shot was to get the right shutter speed to blur the people just enough to soften them, but not have them be formless blurs.<br /> <br /> EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 @ 10.0mm, f/4.5. 1.6s.   • Day 219. February 12, 2011.<br /> <br /> So, I started falling behind editing photos and posting them. And then I thought I should post them in order, so I fell even more behind. There are months of pictures just sitting on my hard drive now, waiting to be looked at and posted, but my goal for February is to catch up. In the mean time, I'll try starting to just post daily again going forward, and backfilling whenever I do get the time to make those edits.<br /> <br /> This pictures is of a staircase near California Ave in Palo Alto, CA. I bike past here all the time, and am always struck by how geometrically interesting the patterns of the shadows are.<br /> <br /> EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 @ 10mm, f/3.5. 1/25s. ISO 1600.
  • Day 220. February 13, 2011. A droplet of water suspended from the end of a 1mL hypodermic needle, providing a view outside my window on a nice warm winter day. The hardest part of this was actually to steady my hands enough to let go of the syringe softly enough so the water droplet wouldn't fall.<br /> <br /> 60s weather in February.   • Day 221. February 14, 2011. Another picture of my alien-looking LED light bulb. Quite a floral pattern. A tribute to all the flowers that bloomed too early because of the heat wave, and will all die soon in an unfortunate, wet, rainy death.<br /> <br /> EF 100mm L IS Macro @ f/2.8, 1/3200s, ISO 100.
