  • Day 3. July 11, 2010. Jessa invited me and two other friends to teach swing dancing at her grandmother's "80th" birthday party. The amount of joy and life at that party was energizing.   • Day 5. July 13, 2010. Babbage has been acting bizarre the past day or two, howling up the palm tree outside my window, and constantly making a deep meowing while walking around the house without seemingly a purpose or reason. This was taken during one of his brief moments of quietude.<br /> <br /> 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro. f/2.8. 1/25. ISO 320.
  • Day 6. July 14, 2010. I was going to take pictures of my friends jumping on trampolines at Sky High today. I woke up in the morning, and charged my batteries so that they'd be full by the time I would use them in the evening, but of course, I forgot the batteries behind when I left in a huge hurry for Sky High, running behind, as always. Hence, I decided that I was going to play with my 100mm 2.8L macro to capture something symbolizing how I never seem to have enough time. So here are the two notebooks that keep track of my life. The top one is a Palantir-provided moleskine for notetaking and journaling, and the bottom is a "non-linear scheduler." <a href="http://www.chrononotebook.com/">http://www.chrononotebook.com/</a>) I started using it this year, and now swear by it. I would be so lost without these.<br /> <br /> 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro. f/6.3. 1/40. ISO 320.
  • Day 7. July 15, 2010. Wolverine rocking out at Palantir's Rock Band competition. The venue was fully decked out with a raised stage, stage lights, projected background, a large-screen monitor TV, multi-camera setup, a full bar, and various other accoutrements. Oh, and we were crowned champions, may I add. :) Taking sharp photos with dim stage lighting is extremely difficult. At ISO 1250 and f/3.2, I still had to have a 1/25 shutter to get enough light on the sensor, so there was a lot of trying to time my shutter clicks with when the player stopped moving for a split second.<br /> <br /> 17-55mm f/2.8 IS. f/3.2. 1/25. ISO 1250. And clipped a lot of the dark in post-processing, as well as the color stuff.

  • Day 9. July 17, 2010. Rock on the beach at Andrew Molera State Park. My first time using a spiffy new ND-1.8 filter, and it was quite the success. I wanted a longer exposure to get a smooth fog-like surface to the water, so I stopped down to f/16 at ISO 100 for a 1 second exposure in early evening light. I love Big Sur.<br /> <br /> 17-55mm f/2.8 IS @ 18mm. f/16. 1s. ISO 100. ND-1.8 filter.
  • Day 10. July 18, 2010. Carl Newman of The New Pornographers performing in concert. This was taken with my trusty Canon PowerShot A650 IS point-and-shoot. At this zoom, the largest aperture was only f/4, but with ISO 800, and a brief burst of semi-bright stage lighting, I managed to catch this shot of Mr. Newman belting out Spanish Techno.
  • Day 11. July 19, 2010. It was a late night at the office, so what could be more fitting than a shot of the magical elixir that keeps me going every day. In retrospect, I probably should have stopped down to 2.8 or 3.2 to get the entirety of the front of the label in focus, but I was way too tired, crashing on that 3-hours-post-coffee-and-Orangina-consumption that so often happens.<br /> <br /> 50mm f/1.4 lens. f/1.6. 1/40. ISO 100.
  • Day 12. July 20, 2010. Upon arriving at the house today, Molly reminded me of the rice cooker bowl that had been filled with water and had started to develop a thick film of mold. So, before washing it out, I obviously had to take some photos. I didn't have good lighting, but it still turned out reasonably well with a huge array of desk lamps pointed at the water. The layer of mold definitely adds some nice texture to the water drops, though I find that not thinking about the fact that the surface of the water is probably a huge biohazard definitely helps the appreciation of this picture. Will certainly try this again once I've invested in some better lighting.<br /> <br /> 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro. f/6.3. 1/2000. ISO 1600.
  • Day 13. July 21, 2010. The demolition crew came in today to start work on remodeling one of our bathrooms. Remind me not to take a shower in my usual place tomorrow morning.<br /> <br /> 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5. 14mm. f/5.0. 1/15. ISO 800.
  • Day 14. July 22, 2010. Upon arriving home today, I noticed a sedentary bee on my car's windshield. Out came the camera and the 100mm macro, and I managed to get about 30 shots before the bee finally flew away. The yellow and green in the background is from the reflected sunlight filtered through a row of trees by the driveway. I rather like the effect.<br /> <br /> 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro. f/8.0. 1/13.   • Day 15. July 23, 2010. After a day of disasters, I finally got a slight break by the Bay Bridge.<br /> <br /> 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5. 14mm. f/11. 1/250. ISO 100.
  • Day 16. July 24, 2010. I went skydiving. I brought a few lenses and got really good at manual focus.
  • Day 17. July 25, 2010. I was at Moss Landing not too long ago, and bought way too many artichokes. I cooked up two for a late night snack. I am always amused at how oddly shaped these vegetables are.<br /> <br /> 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro. f/2.8. 1/50. ISO 400.
  • Day 18. July 26, 2010. The footbridge over the 101 near Oregon Expressway. I was out here one night a while back (to smash pumpkins) and noted to myself that this would be a great place for night photography. So here I am, months later, taking advantage of the full moon to get some night traffic shots.<br /> <br /> 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 @ 16mm. f/4.0. 10s. ISO 100.
  • Day 19. July 27, 2010. OK, fine, I cheated. I skipped July 26 because I was too tired. But look! The almost-full moon is pretty!
  • Day 20. July 28, 2010. The warm glow of the light inside the house peeking out from an open door. We never took down the garland, so there's still a festive air to our house's entrance.
